Preparing Your Vehicle Before You Move

Now that you have decided to ship your car it’s time to prepare it for the transport. Every transport company requires you do some preparation before shipping your car. Inquire with your customer service representative what there requirements are.

We have done some research to better help you to be prepared. Below you will find a basic auto transport process:

  • The auto transport company will do an inspection prior to shipment. You must be present for the inspection and will be required to sign the bill of lading and a vehicle condition report, both at the point of origin and the destination.

  • The vehicle needs to be clean. You do not need to pay hundreds of dollars to have your vehicle detailed however it does need to be clean enough so that the physical inspection can be conducted thoroughly on the day of shipping.

  • You should have the vehicle serviced prior to shipping. Make sure the vehicle is free from any fluid leaks.

  • Ensure you have a complete set of keys available to hand over on shipping day.

  • It is illegal to ship your car with personal belongings inside so be sure everything is removed from the vehicle prior to shipping. The shipping company may also refuse to accept your vehicle if there are any personal items left inside. If there is any loss or damage to these items or your vehicle as a result of these items being in the vehicle, the shipper is not liable.

  • Again it is illegal to transport hazardous materials in your car. Remove all hazardous materials before your pickup date.

  • Remember to prepare your vehicle for any climate changes. Example: have your heating or cooling systems checked and add and coolants or fluids necessary.

  • Remove any EZ-Passes from your car.

  • Disconnect any alarm systems you might have in the car. Alarms can continue to activate during transit causing the car to arrive at its destination with dead batteries.
