apartments. This is usually assessed by the
consultant to ascertain any difficulties the
vehicle may encounter. |
| Accessorial Services include
services other than the transportation of the
customer’s goods. Services including packing,
unpacking and extra pickup are performed by the
carrier at the customer's request. Charges
for these services are in addition to the transportation
costs. |
| Agent - A person or
company appointed by your mover to act on their
behalf, or a member of a Van Line. |
| Air Ride Suspension -
Feature on a removal vehicle, to aid smoother
transit. |
| Auxiliary service (shuttle)
is used if the assigned over-the-road van is
unable to make a normal pickup or delivery because
of physical constraints (extremely narrow road,
inadequate parking area for the truck, weak bridge,
etc.). An auxiliary service is the use of a secondary,
smaller vehicle to complete the pickup or delivery.
Charges for this service are based on the weight
of the shipment and the area of the country where
the service is performed. |

| Bill of Lading - A
customer's receipt for goods and contract
for transportation. The customer's signature
acknowledges that the household goods can be
loaded on the van and "released to the carrier." |
| Binding estimate-
An estimate in which the customer knows in advance
what the move will cost, excluding required destination
services, regardless of variances in the actual
weight (as long as the inventory of the items
actually moved is the same as the estimate inventory
and additional services are not requested.) |
| Blanket Wrapping -
Method of packing furniture to prevent damage
in transit |
| Bonded Warehouse -
Warehouse that meets with local Customs specifications,
allows the storage of items that have not yet
gained customs cleared status. |
| Booking agent One
who accepts the order for the customer's
move and registers it with the van line. The
booking agent may or may not be the origin
or destination agent. |
| Bulky articles include
such items as boats, snowmobiles, golf carts
and campers. These "bulky" items usually carry
an extra charge to compensate the hauler for
the difficulty of loading and unloading, as well
as for their unusual bulk or low-weight density |

| Carrier - the moving
company providing transportation for the household
goods under whose Department of Transportation
registration the shipment is moved. |
Cartons - Boxes
for packing smaller items, some are specifically
designed for certain types of items e.g. Books,
Clothing on hangers. |
| Chargeable Weight -
The weight used by an airline to determine the
air freight charge. |
Claim -
a statement of loss or damage to any household
goods while in the care, custody or control
of the carrier or its affiliated agent. |
| C.O.D. (cash on delivery) shipments
are those where the customer pays the moving
charges at the time of delivery. For C.O.D. shipments,
payment is required in cash or by traveler's
check, money order or cashier's check. If a credit
card is used, it must be arranged with the booking
agent because authorization is required prior
to loading |
The consignee is
the person to whom the shipment is to be delivered. |
Consultant - Person
who will call at your property, discuss your
particular move requirements, usually making
a note of items to be moved, provide information
about their company and a removal quotation. |
Container - Steel
container used for shipping your belongings
overseas, can be used for sea, road or rail
shipments |
Container Storage -
Large wooden containers, your belongings are
loaded into them, sealed and then the container
is stacked away |
| Containerized Vehicle -
Specialist removal vehicle which is designed
to carry storage container, your belongings can
therefore be loaded or unloaded at your residence. |
Conventional Storage -
Your belongings are stacked on the floor in
an allocated space and usually covered with
sheeting. |
Custom Approved Warehouse -
Warehouse that meets with local Customs specifications,

Corporate Account -
When your employer is responsible for the removal
charges. |
Cost per cubic meter -
A rate given on the estimated space your belongings
will fill on a truck / container. Note, ensure

A rate given on the estimated weight of your
belongings. Note, ensure you are happy with
the estimated weight, and ask the mover for
a list of the items the rate is based on and
a Weight Ticket, confirming the actual weight
at the time of the move. |
Cost per cubic feet -
A rate given on the estimated space your belongings
will fill on a truck / container. Note, ensure
you are happy with the estimated volume, ask
the mover for a list of the items the rate
is based on. |

| Declared Value - Value
you the owner declare your goods to be for the
purpose of insurance. This will form the basis
of your insurance cover and it is important that
it reflects the value of your belongings; it
could be the full replacement value or the second-hand
(Indemnity) value dependant on the type of cover
you are arranging. |
Dedicated truck/container -
A truck or container carrying your belongings
exclusively, with move dates specified by you
and agreed by the mover. |
Department of
Transportation (DOT) - the federal
agency which, through the Surface Transportation
Board within the DOT, governs the interstate
transportation industry, including movers
of household goods. |
| Destination Agent -
Agent responsible for arranging customs clearance
and delivery of your shipment. |
| Domestic - Move within
same country, state, county. |

| An estimate is
an approximation of the probable cost of the
move based on factors such as the van space required
the weight of the household goods and the origin
and destination of the shipment. The two basic
types of estimates are binding and non-binding. Also

Excess - The amount
that will be deducted from any insurance settlement,
may be a per item excess or per total claim. |

or cause of damage specifically excluded from
the policy. For example money, jewelry, mechanical
derangement, check the insurance information

| Fixed price quote -
A rate given based on all the information supplied
by you to the mover, this is the price charged
as long as the information supplied is accurate. |
| Foam Molding - Foam
molded to the shape of specific items, usually
very high value and delicate items. |
| Full Cover - Detailed
insurance cover usually includes loss, theft,
fire and breakage, (breakage maybe restricted
to items packed by your professional mover).
May carry excess or deductible, maximum limits
on total value or certain types of items, pairs
and set clause, mechanical derangement clause
and specific exclusions, for example money, stamp
collection and jeweler. Always read details carefully. |
| Full Container Load -
A container carrying your belongings exclusively,
with specified move dates as agreed with your
mover. |

| Insurance Certificate -
A certificate is sometimes given to you or held
on your file by your mover. It is in accordance
with the details you provide on the Insurance
Proposal Form and confirms insurance has been
arranged on your behalf. |
| Insurance Proposal Form -
Usually a condition of arranging insurance. When
completing the appropriate form consider that
it maybe used in the event of a claim, ensure
that you complete it comprehensively, any items
you do not show will be considered not insured.
Make sure you specify items of high value or
of a special nature, you may produce your own
valued listing and attach it to the proposal
form; ensure that you sign the form and your
own listing. |
| Inventory -
a detailed list of the items in the shipment
and their condition before the van is loaded.
The van operator will present the inventory to
the customer after the van is loaded and again
when the shipment reaches the customer's new
home. The customer's signature on the inventory
acknowledges that the goods have been delivered
in the same condition as received by the mover
for transportation. |

Insurance specifically to cover your belongings
whilst in transit over long distances and or
across water by vehicle, ship or aircraft. The
policy will cover specific marine risks; ensure
that you are aware of the nature of the cover
and its inclusions and exclusions. |
| Materials - Various
items with which your belongings are packed for
safe transit e.g., cartons, crates, bubble wrap
and removal blankets |

| National Move - Move
within same country, usually long distance. |
| Net weight is
the gross weight minus the tare weight |
| Non-Allowables are
items that should not be included in the household
goods shipment, including hazardous materials
such as poisons, corrosives and flammables. Unless
special arrangements are made, perishables such
as refrigerated and frozen foods are not allowed.
All non-allowables are prohibited by law. |
| Non-binding estimate -
An estimate based on an inventory of the customer's
household goods and provides the customer with
a pricing guideline. There is no contractual
commitment to this estimate, and the final charges
the customer must pay could be higher or lower
than the estimated costs, depending on the actual
weight of the shipment, the actual services provided
and the origin and destination of the shipment. |

| Order for Service -
A document authorizing the moving company to
transport the customer's household goods |
| Order number - number
used to identify the customer's shipment and
appears on the upper right corner of the Order
for Service and the Bill of Lading. This number
should be used whenever the carrier is contacted. |
| Origin agent - the
agent designated in the origin area to be available
for preliminary readying of the shipment before
movement or to provide information regarding
the customer's move. |
| Origin and Destination
Service Charge - a hundredweight rate
that applies based on the weight of the shipment
and the location where the shipment is picked
up and delivered; compensates the carrier for
basic handling and servicing of the shipment. |
| Overflow -
happens when articles to be shipped are left
behind due to insufficient space on the primary
van. A second van is then utilized for transportation
and delivery. |
| Owner packing - You
choose to pack your belongings yourself, either
into cartons supplied by the mover or into your
own boxes. |

| Packed by owner PBO -
occurs when articles are packed by the customer
for moving. |
Packing List -
Numbered listing of your belongings, with general
description and the condition of items prior
to storage, used for checking that all items
placed in store are accounted for at the time
of delivery. You will be asked to sign the
form at the time of collection and delivery
in agreement with the details, noting any exceptions.
This form maybe used in the processing of an
insurance claim. |
| Part Load - Your belongings
take up part of the space on a truck or in a
container, the cost is therefore shared and usually
results in a saving, suitable for small moves.
Note transit times are usually longer and you
must have some flexibility on your move dates. |

Professional packing -

Protective Pads -

Replacement - Insurance
that provides replacement of the item damaged

Large wooden container, your belongings are loaded

| Storage Extension Cover -
In the event that your consignment is placed
into storage you may need to extend an original
insurance policy (Marine Policy usually), to
cover for this period. There is usually an additional
premium and you may need to give your insurance
provider / mover written instructions to do this.
It is likely that it will be for a specified
period and therefore you may need to make further
extensions. It is in your best interest to extend
an original policy in order that the cover is
continuous and therefore with one insurer. |
| Sub-Contractor - A
company appointed by your mover to carry out
packing, loading, collection or delivery services
on your mover's behalf. |
| Survey is
performed by an agent to examine the customer's
goods in order to develop an estimate of move
charges. |
| Surveyor - A person
who will call at your property, discuss your
particular move requirements, usually making
a note of items to be moved, provide information
about their company and a removal quotation. |

| Tare weight is
that of the van and its contents before the customer's
goods are loaded. |
| Tariff is
the carrier's provisions, including rates, for
services performed, applicable to the customer's

| Third Party Services -
Some movers offer to arrange / co-ordinate additional

Waterbed dismantling/assembling, carpenters,

| Total Loss - Insurance
for your belongings on the restricted basis of
total loss only, this is very limited cover and
you should check the details carefully |
| Transit Insurance -
Insurance for your belongings whilst they are
in transit, the cover provided maybe Indemnity
or New for Old/Replacement, check the details
of the cover you are offered |
| Transit Time - The
time indicated between collection and delivery
of your belongings. |

the declared value of an item is less than the
cost of replacement, insurance compensation will
be restricted to the value declared as a maximum

Unpacking includes
removing the customer's goods from containers
and placing them on a flat surface, as well
as the disposal of such containers and packing
materials. If ordered, unpacking service must
be performed at the time of delivery unless
requested otherwise. |
